The Mud House, designed and built between 1969 and 1971, stands as a prime example of true organic architecture in Australia. Constructed of hand-formed ferro-cement, its freeform design follows the contours of the land, resembling a natural rock formation. The interior spaces flow seamlessly from one to the next, evoking memories of Antonio Gaudi’s Barcelona architecture with a forward-looking optimism. Instead of angular planes, the house is a series of curves, fluid and abstract.
Entering through a carport, the home reveals four bedrooms and 2.5 baths. The informal recreation space sits at the top of the design, providing a sense of privacy and separation from the main living areas. These spaces rise with the site’s contours, transforming from a conversation pit to a dining area, then to the kitchen, and finally leading to two private decks embraced by the exterior walls and the surrounding sandstone escarpment. The house’s retro style features striking brown carpet and authentic vintage pieces, creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout.
Recent enhancements include an outdoor bath on the private deck off the main bedroom and a large entertaining deck off the kitchen, featuring an outdoor fireplace as its centrepiece. Light from sky domes, hand-formed skylight towers, and ‘light folds’ plays across the interior textures, adding a unique dimension to the space. The Mud House offers an architectural experience that few have the pleasure of encountering, blending natural forms with contemporary design in a harmonious and captivating way.
