Types of shoots and what to expect when hiring your home with Pure Locations
Are you thinking about registering your home as a location house with Pure Locations? Here is your guide to all the types of shoots that you can expect.
Having a location house can be an exciting and rewarding experience but it’s important to understand it can also be a disruptive and intrusive process with production crews, props and equipment coming in and out of your house. Filming and photo shoots are going to impact on your home and the level of impact a shoot has will depend upon the size and type of shoot. Production teams will be entering your home and you need to be prepared for a busy house. They may move items around, however, everything will be returned to its original position and the home left as it was found.
To best prepare for filming and photo shoots, we recommend that our homeowners learn about the types of shoots that can take place and what to expect with each. You can choose what bookings to accept and are under no obligation to accept film shoots or photo shoots that don’t work for you.
There are 3 types of production hire for shoots:
- Photo shoots and online content
- Filming and television commercials (TVC)
- Furniture shoots
Types of shoots
1. Photo shoot and online content
Photo shoot
At a photo shoot a photographer will take a series of still images of a person, people or product. It can involve the use of a variety of props and usually has creative and production teams, models and other talent on set. Our most common photo shoots are for magazine covers fashion campaigns, lifestyle campaigns and still life product shoots.
A photo shoot generally:
- Has approximately 12 people or fewer on set
- Takes between 4 -10 hours to complete
- Involves camera equipment that is hand-held and accompanying tripods.
- Includes capturing additional behind-the-scenes and other digital footage for social media
Online content
Filming for online content and social media involves recording motion/video of a person, people or product. This content can be shot for a range of social platforms (including Instagram, Facebook and YouTube), business websites, training videos, and more.
The level of impact on your home will depend on the size of the shoot. The camera equipment used is low impact and can often involve the use of a smartphone or handheld camera. In some instances, additional equipment may be brought in when filming for longer content, like a fitness video for YouTube.
At times, smaller productions filming television commercials (TVC) may be included in this category. This will occur when teams are using low impact camera equipment and a small number of cast and crew on set (up to 12 people)
2. Filming TV and TV commercial
Filming TV programmes and TV commercials (TVC) is a much larger shoot than a general photo shoot and has a higher impact on a home. There will be more people on set, more equipment brought in and require longer days. Filming for a TV production can run for several days, weeks or even months – there is no obligation to accept these shoots.
Because of the higher impact on your home, the hire rate for TV and TVC shoots are priced higher than photo shoots and online content. It may be necessary for crews to move furniture out of your home and restyle areas with their own sets (professional removalists are always used). Crews may even stay overnight (if accommodation is an option at your location).
A TVC shoot:
- Has approximately 25 – 30 people on set
- Takes between 10 – 12 hours to complete
- Involves larger equipment including dollies and tracks
- Can involve filming sound (noise levels in the area need to be known as it could interrupt sound recording)
Filming for TV:
- Has larger crew numbers on set and can involve more than 60 people
- Usually requires multiple days for smaller productions of TV filming or weeks for longer shows
- Requires homeowners to move out (an accommodation supplement will be agreed upon)
- May need to move furniture or even move the furniture out for the duration of filming (professional teams will do the moving)
- May require a set to be built on location
- Will have a bond taken for larger filming bookings
Hirers may need to move your furniture to accommodate their equipment but should always return it to its original position at the end of the shoot. Sometimes, hirers will ask to store equipment overnight in areas of your home or even leave some equipment set up so they can recommence the shoot the following day.
3. Furniture shoots
Furniture shoots generally involve hirers removing furniture from the home and bringing their own pieces of furniture in. The areas hired may also be restyled. These shoots require a higher level of planning and logistics and has a higher impact on your home.
These shoots can involve a variety of furniture pieces including dining sets, lounge suites, bedroom suites and outdoor furniture. If the shoot is for a specific product, like a Samsung TV or a Bosch washing machine, then the hirers may wish to install their own appliance. All hirers use professional removalists and tradespeople when replacing and reinstalling your appliances. They will ensure your own appliances are back in working order when they are placed back into their original position.
Furniture shoots may involve having furniture/props delivered so don’t be shocked if your house becomes full of furniture, bags and boxes. Most teams will arrange for this to be picked up at the end of the shoot, and some may request to leave props overnight.
You will always be advised of what type of shoot is going to be happening at your home and what to expect in relation to the moving of any furniture or if any additional large props or sets will be brought in.
